The Pinnacle Course delivers a slightly more demanding test with narrower fairways, elevation changes, and forced carries that accentuate its strategic nature. Also designed by Weiskopf/Morrish, Pinnacle showcases the high Sonoran Desert’s raw character and dramatic vistas, with several holes routing around striking rock outcroppings. This course tends to reward precision and course management, making it a favorite for more experienced players seeking a stern yet scenic challenge.
Troon North’s Monument Course is widely considered one of Scottsdale’s crown-jewel desert layouts. Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, it winds through rugged desert terrain, around granite boulders, and across undulating fairways framed by towering saguaros. Precision off the tee is rewarded, and well-placed approaches set up opportunities to attack firm, finely groomed greens. The natural beauty and challenge of the Monument make it a must-play for desert golf purists.
The Saguaro Course embodies a pure, minimalist desert experience set in pristine Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation terrain with no homes or development encroaching on play. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the Saguaro follows the natural land contours with wide corridors and a walking-friendly design that emphasizes rhythm and balance. The routing respects the land’s undulations and native features, creating a links-inspired feel uncommon in Scottsdale. Greens and tees sit close together, making it one of the more pleasant and strategic walking rounds in the region.
The Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa offers a contrasting desert golf personality with a more dramatic flair and rugged terrain. With sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and desert washes, Cholla’s layout incorporates hillside ridges and native features that challenge players with altitude changes and strategic carries. The course’s natural features and panoramic vistas make it a favorite among players seeking an immersive Sonoran Desert golf experience.
The Raptor Course at Grayhawk, designed by Tom Fazio, is a classic desert layout that masterfully blends strategy with striking Sonoran scenery. Stretching over 7,150+ yards from the back tees, Raptor rewards bold shot-making while demanding thoughtful positioning off the tee and into its expansive yet undulating greens. Generous fairways give way to deep greenside bunkers and grass collection areas, making scrambling and short-game precision essential. The course has hosted PGA TOUR events and NCAA Division I Championships, reflecting its championship-level challenge and conditioning.
In contrast, the Talon Course offers a more dramatic and rugged desert test, with a layout weaving through deep box canyons, thick stands of Mesquite and Ironwood, and panoramic views of the McDowell Mountains. Designed by David Graham and Gary Panks, Talon emphasizes precision and strategy from tee to green, especially on the back nine where steep drop-offs and clever routing add excitement and challenge. Large, multi-tiered greens demand thoughtful club selection and careful reading of pin positions.
